Reduce the Stigma of Mental Illness for Teens
The stigma of mental illness is just one of those very few remaining prejudices against individuals that are sick. The damaging impact of stigma are particularly damaging to adolescents who have to face the challenges of adolescence together with the extra burden of being calmed and shamed.
To understand the effect of stigma, this particular statistic by the Canadian Mental Health Association says, "It's estimated that in 10-20% mental delays in children occurs and one of those influenced just 1 out of every 5 youth who need assistance will really get it".

A delay in diagnosis and therapy can lessen the prospect of healing and exude victims of trust and well-being.
Stigma's detrimental effects on youth comprise:
- Deficiency of understanding and support by Family Members and Friends
- Isolation, isolation
- Hiding symptoms and preventing help due to fear and pity
- Bullying and harassment
- Self-doubts about skills and retrieval
Do not equate the individual with the illness:
Language may insinuate negative customs. Rather than speaking to somebody, "He is bipolar," or "She is schizophrenic," state "He's bipolar illness," or "She's schizophrenia" The difference may seem subtle but the very first one is a tag while the next is really a non-judgmental statement.
Don't allow stigma produce pity and self-judgment:
Prove by your words and actions that mental illness isn't a indication of weakness nor can it be anybody's fault. There's not any shame in being sick, trying counseling, schooling about a state, and linking with other people for mutual assistance. Praise efforts to look for assist. Recognize acts of empathy.
