First and foremost, both open and closed cell insulation are different from one another when it comes to strengths and weaknesses.   1. The Cells – When it comes to the cells, it is all about the bubbles (cells) which makes the foam. Open cell foam is the one where the cells are purposely left open in a less encapsulated manner. This makes it a softer and flexible material. Closed cell foam is the one where the cells are deliberately closed together. This ensures the air and moisture does not get mixed with the foam.

  3. The R-Value – The R-Value of closed cell foams is 6.0 per inch making it useful in keeping the heat in and out of a structure. While the R-value of open cell foams is lesser in the region of 3.5 per inch making it beneficial in extreme temperature conditions.
